Last night was a great night for me. I started another composition.
Composition can be rewarding, frustrating and bewildering all at the same time. However, last night it didn't matter what I did it sounded right.
I have been asked to compose a waiata for an amazing choir. What a privilege! However, it is always difficult to decide whether you write the words first or the music. This time I have decided to write the music first. The general idea of the words float around in my head as I play, and as I play I feel my Rangitira on my shoulder coaxing me on.
On the note I realise I am now playing more like my dad and brother every day. They both loved playing chords that didn't sound quite right, but then quickly resolved. Fancy tremolos and trills were part of their brand of playing. So thanks you two and mum for providing a childhood that was filled with culture.
