Mastering the Treble and Bass Clefs

The best thing about teaching notation is using the IPad app PianoMaestro by Joytunes. It is a free app that creates a video-game like experience, which is great fun to use. This app is completely free for teachers and students, and the teacher can track the student's progress and set home challenges. It has 500 songs that can be learnt made up of exercise, backing tracks and method books. It listens and responds to students' playing and tracks their timing, technique and correct notes. It can be played on a piano or the IPad itself. I have had to drag some of my students away from it as they compete with their score. It is the best way I know in teaching C,D and E. Of course it goes up levels to challenge all players.
Last term the them for Pam's Music was "Sound before Symbol". This term the theme is "Mastering the Treble Clef and Bass Clefs" Reading the notes has a habit of making our music experience difficult. Well I wonder why.
I will be pulling out all the IPad apps and games I can find to help with this difficult decoding. Some of us manage to master this skill quickly and others take years. So please be patient with the musician in your house.
Welcome to those of you who have just joined Pam's Music this term. Your focus will be on "Sound before Symbol" but PianoMaestro will keep you on your toes for learning the notes. However, everyone will be carrying on with those fun tunes that you can learn by memory.
Congratulations to my wind and brass students. We have been concentrating on Rhythm Lab and the beginnings of improvisation. Of course to improvise properly you need to know your scales. Ha Ha! So this will be your theme for this term. "Scale Fun" Yes I can hear you all now. "You can't wait"
All students have been learning composition and theory through Music Ace. This programme is loved by all, so at least it is not a chore.
Looking forward to seeing you all next term.

- Which line or space is the note on?
- What staff is the note on?
- what is the time value of the note?
- where is that particular note on the instrument? (there are 80'ish notes on a piano to choose from)
- which finger do I use?
